OUR history

Our humble beginnings In 1969 a group of mothers met to discuss plans to form a sporting club for girls in the area. North Rocks Girls Basketball Club was formed from this meeting with an orange belted box pleat tunic, a white blouse and orange bloomers for a uniform. Seven junior teams and one senior team commenced playing at Hills District Women’s Basketball Association with their homeground at Pennant Hills Park, in 1970 with registration fees of $2.50 with a 50 cent weekly game fee. In 1971 the club had 12 teams playing with an increase to 15 teams for 1972, and rising to 53 teams by the early 1980’s. At first, Pennant Hills Park had no amenities on site at all, however an amenities block was commenced by Hornsby Council in 1971, which included a canteen. This canteen helped our club profits, as when one person worked for the full day, our club would receive a quarter of the profits from the canteen. Other ways our club originally made money was from Baulkham Hills Lions Club who donated $10 to help with equipment to set us up. The club name was changed to North Rocks Netball Club on 2 February 1971 and Baulkham Hills Lions Club donated $40 to our Club. All assistance in setting up the club was greatly appreciated. Later, a letter dated 10.10.1972 from Baulkham Hills Club was circulated to other clubs in the area to form a committee to establish an Association within the district. North Rocks Netball Club were part of the inaugural committee formed to establish Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association and from 1975 to the present time, teams from North Rocks are playing in both Associations. North Rocks Netball Club became Incorporated on 26.3.1987. Our teams history1975 North Rocks sent 4 teams to BHSNA whilst still sending 24 teams to HDNA.1977 there were 12 teams at BHSNA and 24 teams at HDNA1978 there were 18 teams at BHSNA and 21 teams at HDNA1979 there were 30 teams at BHSNA and 12 teams at HDNA1985 there were 32 teams at BHSNA and 21 teams at HDNA 1989 dropped down to 26 teams at both Associations.By 2008 we had a total of 15 teams at both Associations dropping to 10 teams in 2017.In 2018 we had only 1 Junior team and 1 senior team at BHSNA and 2 Senior teams at HDNABy 2019 we had 1 Junior and 2 Senior teams at BHSNA and 1 Senior team at HDNA. As of now, we have 1 Junior team at BHSNA, and 1 senior team at HDNA Our demographic for the area has changed dramatically from our hey day in 1985 with 53 teams to currently 2 teams. Our club through the yearsOver the years, our club has been shaped by many other events and people to become what we have today. There have also been many contributions from people who have held positions in the Club as Committee members, umpires, players, coaches, managers and families. We have also had many of our members as part of Hills District Netball Association and Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association’s Committees and Executive over this time.
One such notable event that helped shape our club was being one of only four clubs to compete for the George Mobbs Trophy on 15.8.1971. The other clubs included Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill Unitied, and Gazelles. North Rocks was then the host club for this competition in 1972. A significant part of our history is also the establishment of a midweek competition for women, the brainchild of our then president - Gwen. This began in 1976, with 23 teams with members from as far away as Engadine competing on the two courts at North Rocks Park during the day on Wednesdays. It was the first competition of its kind in NSW and its importance to netball was recognised when the President of NSW Netball, came to umpire two semi-final matches. As more mothers took up paid work, the competition changed to a night competition, growing to 128 teams playing over 4 timeslots and two nights. A Twilight Carnival for 7 yrs to 15 yrs was introduced, again by our president. The Senior Mid Week Competition ended in 2016 but the Junior Twilight Carnival is still continuing to this day.
We have also been fortunate to have some of our players represent either Hills District Netball Association or Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association in the NNSW Competitions held annually; State Age Championships, State Championships, Inter District Competitions, State League Competitions, Night Inter District Competitions, Premier League Competitions, Metro League Competitions and Fast 5 Competitions. In 2019 we saw 3 of our players in Premier League and higher which is a wonderful achievement;
In November 2018 at BHSNA’s AGM, our previous president Gwen was awarded the BHSNA Club Service Award for her contribution at Club Level and Association level on various committees since 1975. A very worthy recipient for all her years of dedication to the sport of netball.Picture of Gwen with her new badge.
